Recent graduate Kelly Lopez, MD, recalls how scholarship support made her Jefferson journey possible.
Thomas Jefferson University is committed to increasing the amount of available scholarship dollars for students throughout the university. Additional endowed scholarship funds are vital to reducing the debt burden for our students and will ensure that the cost of a medical education does not deter future Jefferson students from pursuing their dreams.
Below you can read about generous Jefferson alumni and friends who have recently established new endowed scholarships at Jefferson, which will be matched as part of the new matching program. These new scholarships funds will provide assistance to Jefferson students in perpetuity.
For more information about the new scholarship match, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at 877-533-3443.

Eleanor DePalma Scholarship
|Eleanor DePalma Scoles, |
Peter Scoles, MD ’70, established the Eleanor DePalma scholarship in honor of his mother. The scholarship will support Sidney Kimmel Medical College students with financial need.
Eleanor DePalma Scoles was the youngest of seven children of Italian immigrant parents. World War II interrupted her college studies, and she raised five sons before completing her nursing degree in 1970, the year the same year Scoles graduated from Jefferson.
“She adored her oldest brother, Anthony F. DePalma, MD '29, and like him had a special loyalty to Jefferson,” says Scoles. “I can think of no better way to honor her than to place her name beside his in Jefferson's roster of alumni and friends. I know she would be very proud to help others, as Jefferson has helped us.”
Dr. Scoles is currently the senior vice president of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has served on the Thomas Jefferson University Board of Trustees as an alumni trustee since 2004, and is a member of the SKMC executive committee.
