Peter H. and Louise A. Havens and John P. and Wendy D. Havens establish Professorship in Infectious Disease

W. Paul Havens, Jr., MD, from the
May 1949 issue of the Alumni Bulletin

This May, Peter H. and Louise A. Havens and John P. and Wendy D. Havens established the W. Paul and Ida H. Havens Professorship in Infectious Disease.

Brothers Peter and John named the professorship for their parents as a way to honor their father, W. Paul Havens, Jr., MD, who was the first director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Jefferson. This endowment is the second endowment created by the Havens; in 1990, the family established the W. Paul Havens, Jr., MD Scholarship Fund, which benefits Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University students.

Kathleen Squires, MD, division director for infectious diseases in the Department of Medicine, will be the first physician invested as the Havens Professor. Under her leadership, Jefferson’s Division of Infectious Diseases helps patients with diseases ranging from pneumonia and Lyme disease to MRSA infections, drug-resistant tuberculosis, endocarditis and osteomyelitis. In addition, her expertise in HIV clinical care and research is unparalleled.
